Yes, it's true… Ophelia is going to start carrying a few fall items during our "swimwear off-season". One such designer is Alexis. We are in love with all of her swimwear styles so it was a no brainer for Ophelia to carry her pre-fall clothing.

There is nothing as exciting as welcoming new exciting lines into our stores! We are extending a very warm welcome to Callula Lillibelle, one of our newest additions! Designers William Calvert and Melanie Fraser Hart are bringing youthfulness, sophistication, and classic silhouettes exclusively to Ophelia! We previewed their collection during Swim Week in Miami and were certainly impressed by the unique twist the collection had on classic silhouettes in wonderfully refreshing hues. William Calvert began his career in the land of couture: Paris, France. His background in the design world includes experience at the Houses of Balmain, Rochas, Balenciaga, and Diane Von Furstenburg. He launched his own couture collection after leaving DVF under his name, William Calvert. In 2009, William and Melanie Fraser Hart met through a mutual friend, and soon enough their line was to be born! Melanie Hart initially launched her career in the fashion/art world at the peak of the 80's and 90's and worked notoriously with industry icon, Vidal Sassoon. Currently in her 40's, Melanie was having a hard time finding garments that were sophisticated and age appropriate..and that still had a certain "cool factor" to them at a reasonable price point. Voila! Callula Lillibelle was born.. [named after Melanie's daughter, actually!], William and Melanie's collection, that is meerly the result of two strong design backgrounds merging into one vision. Curious to know what Monica Wise [head designer of L*SPACE] has in her beach bag?... and what her newest collection has to offer? Well, it's your lucky day! We interviewed Monica and found out the scoop behind her 2012 collection and much much more! While we previewed her collection in Miami, we saw everything from that noteworthy fringe suit that we love so much in fun fruity colors to some new fun graphic patterns that are perfect for mixmatching. Not only does her line offer a variety of options to fulfill your physical needs and wants, but she has recently expanded her line [quite literally..think: more coverage] and created some styles that will be sure to keep ya covered! She got technically more advanced this season and added some details to the suits that make them that much more wonderful, and completley functional!

What was your inspiration behind your latest collection?

The 2012 collection inspiration definitely comes from travel and jet setting lifestyle. jetsetters with an eye for fringed tops, draped maxis, tribal prints and wide brimmed fedoras will love this new collection. The collection includes all things resort such as rompers, crochet finishes and lace shorts and gives nod to the tropics with mouthwatering bright colors. The collection includes L*SPACE’s signature flattering fits and a slew of California-style, easy floral prints. Bright colors, bold prints, and wild fringe are mixed with muted, delicate embellishments.

We noticed lots of new styles with more bottom coverage and top support. Tell us about some of these changes.

We wanted to expand our market with more coverage on the bottom this season. We know the L*SPACE woman loves our prints and the easy breezy mix and matching that can be done with our collection, but might want a bit more coverage…conservative if you will. It doesn’t change the look of the suit at all, it’s just personal style without compromising the fit. Our new styles give the collection something new. If we did the same styles EVERY year, our fans would be bored, and so would I, so I like to change it up a bit with rouching detail, removable straps on our bandeaus, reversible styles and new hardware.

What is in your beach bag?

Sunscreen SPF 30, a large beach hat, an oversized towel, some snacks and a huge bottle of water.

If it wasn't for this lovely lady we wouldn't know what to do..or what to wear to the beach! Yes, I'm talking about [the oh so wonderful!] Heidi Klein, of course! We took a peep at her Resort collection while in Miami and were certainly blown away by what we saw. While her swimwear exudes a certain conservative persona, it also has a subtle contemporary flair. We saw everything from lovely scalloped edges to delicate taupe and coral hues. We spotted some of our favorite silhouettes in fun new prints and colors. Her "fold over" bikini bottom is a favorite, no doubt..[it's genius!] Fold it down for a lower style bottom.. or roll it up if you're craving some extra coverage. Her designs incorporate all of your needs and wants- from molded padded tops to full coverage bottoms. Her suits offer plenty of coverage and comfort. ...And if you happen to be one of those lucky ladies that has one of her suits, you know how special they are! She offers support, sophistication, and style to all.

Heads up, everybody there is a new ~~girl~~ line in town! Let us introduce "Genie" Eugenia Kim's new line of head accessories that consists of fashionable hats at a lower price point. What more could you ask for? Fashionable and affordable, we like that combination! Not only are the hats less expensive, but they are ridiculously beautiful. Nothing that should surprise you..her hats are always bound to cause a ruckus, they are simply complement magnets! Her new line, Genie-by Eugenia Kim, offers an array of hat styles, from her signiture fedora's in cute straw woven patterns to the most darling canvas sun hats. On the other hand, her higher end line of hats still hold a special place in our little hearts. Eugenia's Resort Collection was very true to herself as she incorporated crafty trimmed edges to wide brimmed sun hats and added lovely silk sashes alongside hats as an alternative accessory. We were overwhelmed by her impressive collection of sun shielding wonders!

From ikat prints to leather beaded bikinis, Undrest designer, Maria Paz Navales surely took us South of the Border this time around. We got up close and personal with the genuis behind the label as she showcased her genuinly beautiful Resort collection. Crocheted detail was a constant in her collection as we have seen in the past, but she most definatley broadened her horizons with other Native American-esque influenced creations. Aztec printed bikini's, flirty rompers, leather hand beaded satchels, and other Navaho inspired pieces won over our hearts! On the other hand, she stayed true to her label and introduced her cute ruffle edge trimmed bikini's in new soft sherbert hues of bubblegum pink, kiwi green, and sky blue. Maria is all about having fun with her line and encouraging others to do so as well. Did you know everything is made in-house in Los Angeles? Makes the pieces that much more special, if you ask me! Cheers to a great collection!

The Inside Scoop on Tori Praver's Resort 2012 Collection

Day 1: Miami Swim Week is in full swing. We made sure to give Tori Praver a visit to check out her new Resort Collection. While we weren't surprised to see some of the cutest swimwear in her suite, we did see a couple new color scheme trends that we would like to share with you! It's all about neon, let me tell you! She pulled inspiration from the scenery of the Western deserts and the beautiful landscape and wildlife of Africa. She paired warm olive greens and natural blues with high voltage neons for a pop! While her wonderful smocked detail still shined through, we also noticed some cutesy cutouts in some of her bottoms with knotted details. Her noteworthy floral prints are an Ophelia favorite, and she made sure to turn up the heat with her cohesive new color scheme! Fringe, fringe, fringe. Yes! She now is bringing some fringe to the table. How could we complain? We LOVE it! Oh..and might I add that her coverups are as beautiful and effortless as Tori herself? Soft jersey tank dresses, lengthy maxi dresses, and more. Her Resort line will be sure to transport you from the beach to another blissful exotic location in a heart beat! (Did we mention that he was named by Walton County Tourist Council last year as 'artist of the year' ??) We couldn't have asked for a more memorable day with Michael in Grayton! Summer is officially here! It's so nice to see our visitors who love this area as much as we do and continue their vacation traditions each year. Of course, a trip to 30A would not be complete without a shopping spree at Ophelia, but there are other "must visit" shops and to-dos around town that we'd like to share.

First off, check out some of our fav clothing boutiques.
Willow (Rosemary Beach) and Willow+Woods (Seaside) provide a quintessential upscale boutique clothing/jewelry shopping experience. They carry Tory Burch, French Connection, Cynthia Vincent, Current/Elliott, Frye, Kincaid, Tucker and on and on. Our friends Celia and Cindy have incredible taste and it shows in every aspect of their two shops.

For beach-inspired bohemian styles, visit Deja Vu in either Seaside or Pier Park. You may see owner Stephanie in one of her own designs with cowboy boots and a cowboy hat!

Seaside also is the scene for Elliott Boutique, sister store to Village Boutique in Blue Mountain Beach. Elliott is tres chic and so are the owners Linda and Meredith (mother and daughter). While in Rosemary Beach, don't miss Fitz and Emme or Gigi's. You will find lovely children's clothing, toys and gifts at Fitz & Emme. Having two children of her own, Shawn knows exactly what we want, need and don't need!
At Gigi's, expect a hands-on fun-filled experience as you investigate every nook and cranny of the store.

Odds are good you'll need a few things from Publix at Watercolor during your stay. While you're there, be sure to stop in Little Red at Watercolor Crossing. Tara has brought "clothes and toys for girls and boys"to us with her expertly chosen high quality items.

And finally, for a spectacular dinner, try our newest hotspot Seagrove V at the corner of 30A and 395. V offers inside and outside dining with a menu of fresh seafood and produce that's locally sourced.

Kurtas, Caftans and Tunics -- OH MY!

If you're like us, at some point you've wondered what the different terms Kurta, Caftan and Tunic actually mean. Well, let's try to break it down.

Kurta: (per Wiki) a traditional item of clothing worn in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. It is a loose shirt falling either just above or somewhere below the knees of the wearer, and is worn by both men and women. A traditional kurta is composed of rectangular fabric pieces with perhaps a few gusset inserts, and is cut so as to leave no wasted fabric. The cut is usually simple, although decorative treatments can be elaborate.

The sleeves of a traditional kurta fall straight to the wrist; they do not narrow, as do many Western-cut sleeves. Sleeves are not cuffed, just hemmed and decorated.

The front and back pieces of a simple kurta are also rectangular. The side seams are left open for 6-12 inches above the hem, which gives the wearer some ease of movement.

Caftan: According to www.Wisegeek.com, “A kaftan is a long flowing garment that has long sleeves, and is ankle length. The kaftan in original form was made of either silk or cotton and usually worn with a belt or sash around the waist... Sleeves may be either long or elbow length.”

Many women worldwide favor the caftan due to its versatility and comfort. In the United States kaftans ( caftans in the U.S.) are also called muumuus: loose fitting dresses of Hawaiian origin with bold prints.

Today's styles are no longer necessarily floor-length, with kaftan tunics offering versatility for the beach and the city.

Tunic: According to www.wisegeek.com, The word tunic is a near direct translation from the Latin word tunica and is an ancient garment. It was first worn by the Byzantine Greeks, but became most associated with citizens and non-citizens in the Roman Empire. Yet in other countries that had little contact with Rome or Greece until later, like the Norse groups commonly called Vikings, people wore simple tunics. Perhaps the simple structure and design of the tunic is responsible for its spontaneous evolution in several parts of the world.

The first tunic style was simple indeed. It was a long garment, typically about knee length, and usually worn belted with blousing above the belt. It generally featured short sleeves. Roman citizens might wear a toga over their tunic, and Roman soldiers wore tunics under their armor. The garment had an unsewn portion at the head, seams on the sleeve and seams on the side. If you think of a potato sack with a slit to fit for the head and openings on each side to fit the arms, you essentially have the tunic.

Last week, photographer Michael Granberry spent two sunny afternoons photographing Ophelia's HOT local models. All girls were wearing this season's must have swimwear trends.
The locale was breathtaking Watersound Beach! This 30A resort is a 15 minute drive east of Ophelia's shop in Grayton Beach.

Madra of M Public relations was exceptional in assisting us with organizing and styling!

Rolland's Beauty Bar did a fabulous job!! Working with Ophelia on makeup/hair for photo shoots is not an easy task. We like for the girls to look very natural as we think this is indicative of our area. Thank you Shannon and Mindy for creating the perfect "natural glam" look!

Ophelia is thrilled to be selling Nicole's one-of-a-kind tees and cover ups!! The following is our interview with this lovely local talent...

Nicole, we love your work...what motivated you to begin this endeavor?

Well.......... I can't sit still! No, really I have been amazed with fabric since I was little.My mom says when I was 2, everyday I would try on every piece of clothing I owned! When I was eight I would go up into my closet and cut up my clothes and hand sew them back together in different fashions. After having the girls, Laurel (7) and Laine (4), I realized I had never fallen out of love with fabric. I became quite consumed with it. When Laurel started kindergarten in the fall of 2009 is when I was urged by some good friends to give it a go, so I thought well lets put it out there and see where it will take me.

You have a family history of creativity.... Tell us about it.

I would have to say it came from my mom's side! My great-grandmother and my grandmother were professional seamstresses in Palm Beach, F.L, in the era where seamstresses made the full ensemble, dresses, hats, gloves and purses. I believe this is where I get my love of textile art. My mother is a photographer. Growing up in Long Island, N.Y. mom would frequently take me into the city for museum and gallery hoping. ( ( ( Hence why I know nothing about football! )

What brought your family to Santa Rosa Beach?
My husband is a Superintendent with B.L. Harbert ( based out of Birmingham) , he was put on a project at Eglin Air Force Base. Having vacationed down here in Santa Rosa Beach, we both jumped at the chance to live here!

When you aren’t working, what do you enjoy doing?

When the weather is suitable I have the girls at the beach, it seems to be the only place I can sit still! Sometimes I even bring my hand-stitching work with me! I guess on my tags is should say made ON the beach! This fall I also started Pure Barre and Yoga. I found I really enjoy doing something purely for myself (what a concept! )

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

So why is that such a hard question? I have quite a long list. I guess there is the answer, I wouldn't be so hard on myself.

What do you love most about your career?

It has given me a huge sense of self worth.Very different from anything else. Creating something beautiful comes just a few rungs below giving birth. It has given me back to myself. After having the girls, and fully embracing being a mommy ( and loving it), I have had a really hard time justifying doing something that is "my own" and " just for me. That's what I love about what I do.

Finally, what is your inspiration for the unique pieces you are doing for Ophelia? We love them!

With my first meeting with Tori, I was enchanted with the space. I felt very at home there, Ophelia has a beautiful organic, graceful style. So much attention to fine detail. I really enjoy getting to know Tori's creation of Ophelia. As all pieces that I create for retail are exclusive to that store, I really enjoy " dancing with another person's vision" .

Ophelia is in love with Italian Designer Delfina!

In 1992 Delfina Marsaglia decided to create a little collection of swimsuits. Gloria Baume, the editor of Vogue, was vacationing in Rome, bought one of Delfina's stlyes and fell in love with it. Immediately Delfina's swimsuits began selling at Bergdorf Goodmans, Saks fifth avenue, and Barneys.

Delfina has been featured many times in magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, GQ, Glamour…

The swimsuit collection has now expanded to include tunics, sarongs, pants and other accessories. Only the finest Italian fabrics are used and the embroideries are often made in South Italy by the last generation still taught on the art of hand-embroidering.

Today Delfina not only takes care of her own line but also designs and produces the swimwear line for Calypso and Tory Burch.

Knitted Bikinis from San Fran?

Today I received an email about these Handmade knitted bikinis that have been featured in some recent west coast fashion shows.

Brightly colored yarn is loosely knitted on top of a contrasting colored lining. This creates a layered effect in the sunlight. It is the different colors of the yarn and lining that really makes these suits stand out. The suits are fully lined!

Beacause each suit is handmade the prices tend to be a little higher. So my questions to you are :

Ophelia is excited to be carrying Mac Farms Olive Oil!

This olive oil is produced locally by our wonderful farmer friends over at Mac Farms. The oil is made from Italian olive trees that are grown in the San Juaquin Valley in CA. Olives are pressed using an old stone press and the resulting peppery finish oil is then shipped to the McAlexanders. AND we are so lucky for it. What a wonderful gift!!! Come taste for yourself.

Ana Mall and I decided to suit up and head to the beach yesterday. Ophelia has received so many new shipments these past few weeks that we decided to stage our own little photo shoot. Naturally we headed to Grayton Beach.

Grayton Beach State Park is a must do for visitors. This 2000 acre State Park sits on the south side of 30A next to Western Lake. Visiters are offered the oppurtunity to camp, kayak or canoe. Ophelia's favorite thing is the Nature Trail which winds through a costal forrest where scurb oaks and magnolias all seem to twist together along the sand. This is where Ana and I took most of our pics!

Candace Price is the heart and soul (and brains) behind the gorgeous line of products called Tilly Towel. She is a mother, wife, entrepreneur, business owner and our friend! Hope you enjoy getting to know her a little better...

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF, CANDACE.
I have lived in South Walton for over 6 years and I love fashion and design! I have been designing and making jewelry since I moved to the beach from Nashville. A couple of years ago I searched for the perfect beach towel. To my surprise, I never found it so I decided to make my own. That was the beginning of Tilly Towel! I began by producing fabric samples with various types of terry cloth. Then I selected a pattern and we proceeded with production. I began with two products – the adult and baby towels. Since then I have added children’s hooded towels and cover ups.

DESCRIBE THE TILLY PRODUCTS AND WHAT MAKES THEM SO WONDERFUL.
Tilly Towel products are made with 100% cotton fabric and French terry cloth. The more you wash them the softer they become.

WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION?
I definitely have a creative side that allows me to explore with lots of different ideas. I love design and fashion and that is probably where I find most of my inspiration. We also take family trips each year and I enjoy harnessing inspiration from other places. One of my favorite spots is St Barths. It always gets my creative juices flowing.

HOW DOES OUR BEACH ENVIRONMENT AFFECT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
There is nothing better than the beach and the laid back attitude that goes along with it. The tranquility of our area with the dunes and dune lakes is a great foundation in which I build on.

IF YOU COULDN’T LIVE AT THE BEACH, WHERE WOULD YOU LIVE AND WHY?
I don’t think I could live anywhere but the beach! But if there was one other place, I think the style in Aspen is top notch. We travel there quite a bit because my husband is an avid skiier. It is a nice compliment to our time on 30-A.

BIGGEST PET PEEVE?
Bad champagne at parties.

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPIEST?
My family! I’m a big family girl and love nothing more than to be with my son, husband, and my Pug Tilly.

IF YOU COULD SWAP LIVES WITH SOMEONE FOR ONE DAY, WHO WOULD IT BE WITH?
Hmmm this is a hard one. I would love to be Tory Burch. She has built a sucessful brand from her own style. I would love to understand the business aspects of growing a brand that hits the masses.

ADVICE TO OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE AFRAID TO TAKE A RISK?
Just do it! You’ll be surprised at the support you receive from the community that helps you juggle work & family!

Swimsuit Tips for Different Body Types

So ladies, do you think you’re wearing the swimsuit that best flatters your figure? Hmmmm…Not sure? Odds are good that your body has evolved since you were 18 years old – yes? Some of us have added a few kiddos to our mix and now need some extra ‘lift’ here and there. Others have worked diligently on their body and want to proudly show it off. Whatever the situation, we can help you find the best fit. After all, we want you to look HOT!

Have a small chest?
There are several ways to add oomph up top. Try triangle styles with extra padding and some embellishment such as ruffles. Busy patterns and horizontal lines will also give the impression of fullness. And try a strapless bandeau style top. Not all body shapes can pull these off but when worn correctly, they are muy caliente!

Have a large chest that you want to play down or provide good support?
Tops with wider straps will provide needed support vs spaghetti straps or strapless styles. Underwires will also help lift and support. V-neck styles will add length and elongate the body taking away emphasis on the chest area.

Have a big bottom?
Some of us have pear shaped bodies and need to create a more balanced look. Try a lower cut top that will move the eye upwards. A solid colored bottom and patterned top will also accomplish this. Avoid horizontal lines that add width. And if you’re overly conscious about your derrière, try a solid swim skirt.

Need to play down larger thighs?
Once again, moving the eye to another part of the body is key to camouflaging certain areas. Try a solid bottom with high-cut legs that elongates the thighs. Pair them with an interesting patterned or embellished top. Avoid low-cut legs.

Fall is in the air and my daughter and I decided to give Ophelia some outdoor color. You see, Vivian and I spend a lot of time together in Ophelia and therefore take on many projects. Whether we are arranging clothes and playing "swimsuit shop", coloring pictures to hang behind the counter, dancing to Michael Jackson, selling Lemonade out front, or simply planting some flowers; the two of us always have a good time.

As you can tell from Ophelia's logo, I love orange and blue!

After I decided that I wanted to open up my own bathing suit shop, the first person that I called was Laura Ganberry. She had come highly recommended from several people and had an outstanding reputation as a graphic designer. Laura answered my phone call and promptly set up an appointment to discuss logo and branding ideas. She listened to what I wanted and worked quickly to design my logo and create business cards. Since then, she has helped me with all of my adds, outdoor signs, tee shirt design, bag design, Ophelia interior design, etc… I am so thankful that when I need something done yesterday, I have Laura to call.
